Dutchman Sentenced to Three Years in Russian Prison for Assaulting Police Officer

A Dutch national has been sentenced to three years in a Russian prison for assaulting a police officer. The incident occurred during a protest in Moscow last year, highlighting the tense relations between protesters and law enforcement in Russia.

The 35-year-old man, identified only by his last name, Knook, was found guilty of using violence against a representative of authority, according to the court’s decision. He was also ordered to pay a fine of 150,000 rubles (approximately €1,800).

The prosecution alleged that Knook pushed and punched a police officer during an unauthorized rally in July 2021. He was initially detained and subsequently charged with the offense, which carries a penalty of up to eight years in prison.

Knook’s lawyer argued that his client acted in self-defense, stating that the police officer had pushed him first. However, the judge ruled that there was enough evidence to support the prosecution’s case.

The sentencing follows a wave of protests in Russia against the detention of opposition leader Alexei Navalny and the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Authorities have been cracking down on protesters, with many arrested and facing charges similar to Knook’s.
