MANILA, Philippines — U.S. service members with the Marine Rotational Force–Southeast Asia (MRF-SEA) joined forces with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the BreadTalk bakery chain in December to bring holiday cheer to communities across the Philippines.
Community Outreach Efforts
Two outreach events were held: the first on December 11th at Naval Station Leovigildo Gantioqui in San Antonio, Zambales, and the second on December 16th at the Nimaria Kalua Ni Maria elderly home in Antipolo City, Rizal. The events, sponsored by BreadTalk’s charity program, aimed to provide comfort and connection to those in need.
In San Antonio, volunteers distributed groceries, medicine, school supplies, and toys to over 50 families, including members of the Aeta indigenous community. At the elderly home in Antipolo City, residents welcomed the volunteers with songs, dancing, and performances.
Mary Grace Torres, a representative of BreadTalk, emphasized the importance of bringing happiness to those facing hardship during the holidays. Sister Nelia J. Montuya of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, who administer the group home, noted the significant impact of visitors on the well-being of the elderly residents, stating, “The presence of visitors is very important to our elderly…It makes them feel happy and valued.”
A Shared Sense of Service
U.S. Navy Lt. Rebecca Thomas, a critical care nurse deployed with MRF-SEA, participated in both events alongside AFP military nurses. She highlighted the core values of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, stating, “As service members, it’s in our name to serve people — especially during the holidays.” AFP Lt. Col. Maria Pilar A. Narisma echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that “It’s not just about donations…What truly matters is showing up and spending time with them.”
For service members deployed far from home, these events provided a unique opportunity to create a sense of belonging. Lt. Thomas shared that, “Not being able to spend Christmas at home with my family made it really meaningful to spend time with others and create a new sense of family.”
