“When we position this in the context of other studies like this in adults, 96% of adults experience viral rebound before 12 weeks of treatment interruption, which means only 4% of adults have no detectable virus in the blood after being off treatment for 12 weeks or more,” explained Gabriela Z. L. Cromhout, MD, MSc, DTM&H. “This shows us that a much larger proportion of very early treated children born with HIV are able to control HIV without medication owing to early treatment alone.”

Researchers believe children may have a greater potential for HIV cure than adults due to several factors. Early ART initiation leads to a smaller viral reservoir, and the immune systems of young children remain strong and capable of fighting opportunistic infections.
