Powerful 6.8 Magnitude Quake Strikes Tibet, Leaves 53 Dead and Over 60 Injured; Neighboring Countries Feel Tremors

A devastating 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Tibet’s Damei county on Monday, leaving at least 53 people dead and more than 60 injured. The quake sent tremors reverberating through neighboring countries, triggering panic and structural damage.

The epicenter of the quake was located nearěna city, also known as the gateway to Mount Everest, at a depth of around 10 kilometers, as per the China Earthquake Networks Center. The quake, which occurred at around 9:05 AM local time, was followed by several aftershocks, with one the largest measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale.

Central Television Station reported that Tibet had suffered 9 fatalities, with the disaster affecting nearly 80,000 people in Dengie county alone. The region has since been placed on a Level II response, indicating the seriousness of the situation.

Footage from social media showed roads in nearby places like Lazi county littered with debris from collapsed buildings. The tremors were also felt over 400 kilometers away in Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital, causing residents to flee their homes.

Historic Quakes in the Region

In 2015, a 7.8-magnitude quake struck Nepal, limited 9,000 lives and injuring thousands more. It remains the deadliest quake in Nepali history. Tibet itself experienced a 7.1-magnitude quake in 2008, leaving around 83,000 people homeless.

This latest tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the power and unpredictability of earthquakes in this seismically active region. As rescue efforts continue, authorities urge residents to stay vigilant and follow safety protocols in case of aftershocks.
