A powerful earthquake struck Catamarca province, Argentina, on the evening of December 24, causing concern and surprise among residents. The National Institute of Seismic Prevention (INPRES) reported a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale.
The earthquake occurred at 19:42 local time and was epicentered 139 kilometers northwest of La Rioja, 164 kilometers west of San Fernando del Valle, and 27 kilometers southeast of Tinogasta. The focus of the seismic activity was 152 kilometers deep.
While no immediate reports of significant damage or injuries have been received, the earthquake is a stark reminder of the region’s seismological activity and the importance of preparedness.
