An East Auckland retail complex parking lot became the scene of an alleged robbery and assault Friday afternoon, leaving a woman with bruised and scratched shin and sending a bustling lunchtime crowd rushing to her aid, according to eyewitness accounts and police reports. A 39-year-old man from Otara was subsequently arrested within 45 minutes of the initial report.
Incident Details at Ti Rakau Dr Retail Complex
The incident unfolded at approximately 1.10 p.m. near the Kmart entrance of the retail complex on Ti Rakau Dr. Amber Robinson-Frani was eating lunch with her two sons at Sumthin Dumpling when the alleged attack occurred. According to Robinson-Frani, the carpark was full and busy for a Friday lunchtime when her teenage son noticed unusual activity. Her son reported hearing a woman screaming and subsequently observed a stolen vehicle trying to exit across the pedestrian crossing at the front of Kmart, with its front bumper half broken off from striking the curb during a hurried escape.
Robinson-Frani went outside to investigate and found the victim sitting on the ground at the back of the carpark as bystanders gathered around. “The lady was sitting on the ground of the carpark screaming and crying, someone was holding her, she was massively in shock,” Robinson-Frani told 1News. Bystanders rushed to help the woman, who showed her bruised and scratched shin and screamed for someone to call her husband, according to Robinson-Frani’s account.
Police Response and Arrest Timeline
Police received a report that a woman had her handbag stolen and was then assaulted in the carpark. Authorities mounted a swift response, locating and arresting a 39-year-old man from Otara within 45 minutes of the report. “Police are pleased to have been able to respond quickly, with the alleged offender located and arrested within 45 minutes of the incident being reported,” a police spokesperson stated.
The suspect has been remanded in custody following the arrest.

Legal proceedings will formally address the charges filed against the Otara man, which encompass aggravated assault, theft, failing to stop, and drug-related offences.
