The daughter of Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González has spoken out against alleged reprisals and firmly denied her husband’s involvement in a coup attempt, climbed to power last weekend.
In an interview with El Nuevo Herald, González’s daughter claimed that her father had been facing intimidation and threats since her husband, Juan Guaidó’s rival, was detained last week. She dismissed accusations that her husband was involved in the failed coup, asserting, "It’s a lie. My husband has been a peaceful and democratic leader. He’s not behind any coup."
The opposition has been calling for protests against President Nicolás Maduro‘s inauguration for a second term, claiming it to be illegitimate. Demonstrations have been organized in cities worldwide, including Caracas, New York, Buenos Aires, Brussels, and Madrid.
González himself has been actively engaged in international diplomacy, scheduling meetings in the United States following his husband’s detention. In a statement reported by Barron’s, he asserted, "I’m calling on the international community to exert pressure on the Maduro regime to free my son-in-law and respect the will of the Venezuelan people."
Reports from Bloomberg and the Houston Chronicle echoed González’s concerns about his son-in-law’s detention, describing it as part of an escalating crackdown on opposition figures. The opposition leaders say the detentions aim to intimidate those who oppose Maduro’s rule.
As Maduro’s second term begins, tensions between his government and the opposition remain high. The United States, along with several Latin American and European countries, have recognized Guaidó as Venezuela’s rightful president, increasing diplomatic pressure on Maduro. However, Maduro’s government has consistently accused the U.S. of intervening in Venezuela’s internal affairs, stressing its commitment to defending Venezuela’s sovereignty.
