Edward Patrick O’Leary, 88, of St. John’s, passed away peacefully on Wednesday evening, December 17, 2025, at the Health Science Center following a sudden illness.
A Life Rooted in St. John’s
Born to Mary (Morrissey) and Peter O’Leary, Mr. O’Leary spent most of his life in St. John’s, raised with his nine siblings on Signal Hill – a place he often fondly referred to as “The hill.” He received his education at St. Joseph’s and St. Pat’s High School. A four-year period of service in the Navy took him to England, where he also pursued work.
Career and Community Involvement
Mr. O’Leary dedicated 43 years to his profession, beginning his career at the L.A. Miller Center in 1975 and ultimately retiring as Electrical Foreman from the Health Science Centre. He completed his training as an electrician at the College of the North Atlantic. Beyond his professional life, Mr. O’Leary was an active member of the community.
He participated in the St. John’s regatta as a rower from 1969 to 1976 and enjoyed a variety of hobbies, including playing the guitar, hockey, softball, horseshoes, gardening, hiking Signal Hill, berry picking, and trouting. He met his wife, Carmel (Broaders), while both were employed at the Old General in 1965.
Family and Remembrance
Mr. O’Leary is predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Carmel Rita (Broaders) O’Leary, who passed away in 2020, as well as his parents, several siblings-in-law, and other family members including his brother Peter O’Leary and sister Helen Lamar.
He is survived by his daughter, Constance O’Leary; son, Terry O’Leary (Karen); granddaughters Kirsten, Vanessa O’Leary; and grandson Timothy O’Leary. He is also survived by sisters Joan O’Leary, Roselind O’Leary, and Sharon Barrett (Keith); and brothers Basil (Iris), Paul (Theresa), Roger (Sharon), Brian O’Leary, and Rita (Noonan) Cull (Henley).
The family has expressed special thanks to his sisters, particularly Sharon, his granddaughter Kirsten, Provincial Home Care staff, and the staff at the Health Sciences 4NB.
Visitation Information
Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 21st, 2025, from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. at 329 Freshwater Road. Flowers are gratefully accepted. Cremation has taken place.
