White House Dinner Brings Leaders and Musk Together

Photographs from Thursday’s state dinner captured US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in good spirits. Trump has previously described the bond between the two heads of state as a “flott vennskap” (great friendship), according to Norwegian reporting of the event. Xi was seated immediately next to Trump during the banquet at the White House.

World’s richest man Elon Musk also secured a seat at the presidential table. Images from the evening show Musk sitting directly beside US First Lady Melania Trump, indicating a notable return to the inner circle of the administration. This seating arrangement follows previous reports that Musk stepped away from the Trump administration.

From Public Feud to Renewed Alliance

The close dynamic between Musk and Trump experienced severe friction around June of last year, culminating in a fierce social media dispute. In May, Trump stated that he did not know if they would maintain a good relationship moving forward, adding that he felt “veldig skuffet” (very disappointed) by Musk’s outspoken criticism.

The public clash erupted when Musk attacked Trump’s proposed federal budget. Musk condemned the proposal as “motbydelig” (disgusting) and argued that anyone supporting it should feel ashamed. Contending that the legislation would increase the United States national debt—a fiscal issue Musk attempted to cut when he worked for Trump—he posted a direct call to action on X: “Ring senatorene deres. Vi kan ikke ødrelegge Amerika. KILL the BILL.” (Call your senators. We cannot destroy America. Kill the bill.)

While Trump maintained that Musk was fully aware of the legislation before criticizing it, Musk countered that he had never actually seen the text of the bill. Despite the bitter exchange, signs of a thaw emerged by late autumn. Musk returned to the White House for an official dinner in November and accompanied Trump during a presidential visit to Xi in Beijing in May.

Regulatory Backing from Washington

Beyond the diplomatic optics of the state dinner, the United States government demonstrated concrete policy alignment with Musk’s business interests on Thursday. Reuters reported that federal authorities confirmed their support for Musk in an ongoing legal battle against the European Union.

The intervention aims to help cancel a 120 million euro fine levied against Musk’s social media platform, X, by European regulators. The formal backing underscores a broader stabilization of ties between the tech billionaire and the White House following months of public discord.
