A teenager from Stokke, just a stone’s throw from Torp Airport, got an unexpected eyewitness experience on Saturday evening when a KLM aircraft performed an emergency landing. The 15-year-old, Joel Röhrs, was in his bedroom when he spotted the plane around 7 PM.
"I was blown away," said Joel, who has always been fascinated by aviation. "I’ve never seen anything like it."
Röhrs was surprised but managed to keep his cool. He grabbed his phone and started recording the extraordinary scene, capturing the moment the plane touched down and emergency services rushed to meet it. He quickly shared the footage on social media, where it gained traction and was seen by many.
The KLM aircraft, bound for Amsterdam, had faced engine trouble shortly after taking off. The pilot, demonstrating exceptional skill, managed to land the plane safely.
"After the plane had landed, I saw fire trucks and other emergency vehicles rushing towards it," said Joel. "It was quite a sight."
Despite the drama unfolding in the sky above, Joel couldn’t help but feel a sense of admiration for the pilot. "I can’t imagine how difficult it must have been," he said. "The pilot did an amazing job."
This wasn’t the first time Torp Airport has faced such a situation. In 2017, another aircraft made an emergency landing due to a technical malfunction. Fortunately, thanks to the professionalism of the pilots and the preparedness of local emergency services, no injuries have been reported in either incident.
While Joel hopes he’ll never experience another emergency landing, he admits it was an unforgettable sight. "I’m just glad everyone was safe," he said.
As investigations into the cause of the engine failure continue, Torp Airport resumed normal operations following the incident. The airport’s pilot, air traffic control, and emergency services deserve praise for their swift and effective response, ensuring the safety of passengers and crew.
