The unusual lineup emerged after a concerted internal campaign by the brothers to compete together on the same squad. When they didn’t get to do that, they took one anchoring leg each. “We had an intensive campaign for that we should run in the same team. But we didn’t get to do that so then we had to take one anchoring leg each. That we would go out at the same time, yes, I will remember that,” Emil Svensk said.
Entering the final stretch, the Czech Republic held the lead while the Swedish second team sat fifth, just nine seconds adrift. Middle brother Emil Svensk, 33, and youngest brother Viktor Svensk, 25, both featured heavily in the early medal hunt. As the course wore on, Viktor faded physically, while Emil maintained his pace in the front group.
Emil Svensk ultimately powered the Swedish second team to a bronze medal finish, crossing the line just seven seconds behind the gold medal time. Switzerland claimed the gold, with Norway taking silver. “It was incredibly fun today. It’s a bit bitter, but I did what I could,” Emil Svensk noted after the race.
Teaming with Emil on the bronze-winning squad were Simon Imark and Simon Hector. Their podium finish capped a strong overall championship for the Swedish men’s team, yielding five medals across the event. Meanwhile, Viktor Svensk and the Swedish first team placed seventh, and the third team finished 17th.
