Last May, the GVB, Amsterdam’s public transport operator, began a pilot project employing foreign bus drivers from Greece and Spain. The GVB reports positive experiences from both passengers and colleagues. Passengers seem to understand the necessity of this move, as the labor market for public transport is becoming increasingly challenging. The foreign drivers are enrolling in Dutch language courses alongside their general driver training. Melanie van der Horst, the city councilor responsible for public transport, is pleased with the pilot’s progress, highlighting the positive interactions between passengers and English-speaking drivers. She emphasizes the urgent need for new bus drivers.
In July, the GVB issued a call for foreign bus drivers with at least two years of experience. Four new candidates have begun their training, with more expected to join in early 2023.
Title: GVB Extends Pilot Program with English-Speaking Bus Drivers
Residents and tourists in Amsterdam have been enjoying a more tourist-friendly public transportation experience, thanks to GVB’s (Gemeentelijk Vervoerbedrijf) pilot program that introduced English-speaking bus drivers. Due to its success, the company has decided to extend this initiative, making it a permanent part of their services.
About GVB
GVB, the public transport operator in Amsterdam, provides tram, bus, metro, and ferry services in the city and surrounding regions. With millions of passengers daily, GVB plays a crucial role in the city’s mobility.
The Pilot Program
In April 2021, GVB launched a pilot program to have multi-lingual drivers, particularly English-speaking ones, on board city buses. The primary goal was to enhance the travel experience for tourists and international residents, ensuring they could communicate better with drivers and understand important announcements.
A Successful Run
Over the past months, the pilot program demonstrated positive results. Tourists and international residents welcomed the initiative, finding it helpful and reassuring. Locals also appreciated the change, as it contributed to a more inclusive and visitor-friendly environment.
Extended Services
Based on the pilot’s success, GVB has decided to extend the program indefinitely. Starting from this month, English-speaking bus drivers will be present on Amsterdam’s busiest routes throughout the day, ensuring that passengers have access to assistance in their preferred language.
Jasper Jagers, Director of GVB, expressed his enthusiasm about the extension, saying, "We’re thrilled to make this initiative a permanent part of our service. It’s a small step that goes a long way in making our city more accessible and welcoming to all."
Future Plans
GVB is also exploring the possibility of introducing other languages on board, further expanding its multilingual services. The company is committed to continually improving the travel experience for everyone in Amsterdam.
So, the next time you hop on a GVB bus, chances are you’ll be greeted by a friendly, English-speaking driver ready to assist you. Happy travels!
