Hundreds of people came together in the heart of the city to partake in the festivity of Chanooka, an eight-day Jewish celebration that commenced on Wednesday, December 25, 2025, and culminated on January 2, 2026. While they gathered to celebrate, they also took a moment to reflect on the global conflicts that continue to affect many.
"It’s important to acknowledge what’s happening around the world, but our focus right now should be on the celebration," said one attendee, highlighting the festival’s message of unity and hope amidst challenging times.
The people gathered on Dam Plaza emphasized that the festival, held annually for over 2,000 years, is a celebration of unity and understanding. "It’s about coming together," said one participant, "regardless of our religious differences, we’re here to celebrate the warmth and positivity."
However, the atmosphere was not without mixed emotions. Some attendees felt the significance of the location, which has seen both joyous celebrations and concerned protests. "The Dam has become a symbol of both freedom and tension," said another attendee. "It’s a reminder that while we celebrate, there are still issues that need to be addressed."
During Chanooka, each night an additional candle is lit on the candelabrum called a Chanookiah, with the eighth and final candle symbolizing the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness, and freedom over oppression. The festival pays tribute to the Maccabean Revolt, when the Jewish people fought for and ultimately regained their religious freedom.
Worldwide, people are celebrating this historic event, each candle lighting serving as a beacon of hope and resilience, uniting diverse cultures and faiths despite the challenges faced globally.
