Essen-Steele Christmas market opens in October for 50th anniversary

The Essen-Steele Christmas market has opened its gates in late October 2026, marking the first such opening in North Rhine-Westphalia this season. The market is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a schedule that runs through January 3, featuring approximately 100 stalls and a music program with around 100 artist appearances, according to organizers.

50th Anniversary prompts October start

While most German Christmas markets typically open after Totensonntag on November 22, the Essen-Steele event has historically started earlier, often waiting until All Saints’ Day on November 1. This year’s October opening is a first for the district, a decision organizer Leon Finger attributed to the market’s 50-year milestone.

Essen Thomas Kufen officially opened the event. The market’s early start means booths are currently situated under colorful deciduous trees rather than winter landscapes.

Stefan Mross moderates the new Singing Christmas Tree stage

The event features a new “Singing Christmas Tree,” a five-story scaffold construction shaped like a fir tree that serves as the main stage for musicians. Entertainer Stefan Mross moderated the opening weekend on October 30 and 31 under the motto “Immer wieder Steele!”

Other scheduled performers include Tim Peters, Norman Langen, Daniel Lopes, and Noel Terhorst. Some fans expressed disappointment on social media over the absence of other stars, including Anna-Carina Woitschack.

Leon Finger expects one million visitors

Organizer Leon Finger expects approximately one million visitors this year, an increase from the 900,000 who attended last year. He noted that 90 percent of the exhibitors are returning vendors.

Prices for staples remain stable, with mulled wine costing four euros and bratwurst priced at 4.50 euros, according to Finger.

Leon Finger departs as organizer

The 79-year-old local fashion store owner, Leon Finger, will step down as organizer after this season. Finger cited increasingly demanding security and bureaucratic requirements for hosting public festivals as a primary reason for his departure.

Finger also observed a decline in the market’s religious significance. He stated that almost no one now perceives the event as a celebration of the birth of Christ, noting that the large nativity scene that once drew specific crowds has long been put into storage.

Helicopter arrival scheduled for December 6

A tradition established by Finger will continue on December 6, when a Santa Claus performer is scheduled to land by helicopter in the nearby Ruhrwiesen. From there, the performer will be transported by carriage, followed by children, to the market for the festivities.
