Breaking Barriers: EU Commission Warns Musk’s Twitter Interview could Violate Digital Rules

EU’s policymakers are raising concerns about Elon Musk‘s upcoming Twitter Spaces interview, warning it may breach the bloc’s digital regulations. A spokesperson for the EU commissionopened up about these worries at a Brussels press conference on Monday.

The EU commission is particularly scrutinizing the high-stakes live interview slated to air on Twitter Spaces this Thursday, investigating if it could be another mark in Musk’s ambitious streak that breaks the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA) and the recently enforced digital platform rules.

A formal probe into Twitter’s potential violations of DSA began last December and remains ongoing. "What’s clear is that DSA neither forbids live broadcasts nor personal views," the commission’s representative clarified. "However, we’re looking into whether the platform operates within DSA boundaries and if the risks have been assessed appropriately."

Under the DSA, leading digital platforms are obliged to tackle the threats of dis- and misinformation. The recent wave of controversial tweets from Musk, including harsh criticism of the UK’s Labour government and derogatory remarks about a British MP, has fueled these concerns.

UK’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer responded to these tweets, accusing Musk of spreading falsehoods and misinformation. Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre echoed these concerns, expressing worry about Musk’s growing influence in Europe’s political landscapes.

"If a person with such vast access to social media and significant financial resources can intervene so directly in other countries’ internal affairs, it’s worrying," Støre stated during a Monday appearance on NRK’s Political Show.

As Musk’s Twitter interview looms, the EU commission’s warning serves as a reminder of the global impact and regulation needed for tech spearheads like Musk. The digital world is evolving fast, and so are the rules that govern it. Stay tuned for more updates as the situation unfolds.
