A recent study from the University of Manchester, led by Dutch molecular geneticist Norman van Rhijn, indicates a troubling rise in pathogenic fungal infections. In Europe, and particularly in the Netherlands, Aspergillus fumigatus is the most prevalent. Meanwhile, the Aspergillus flavus, typically found in warmer parts of the world, is making a noticeable appearance in Europe. This pathogen’s incidence could rise by 16% in the near future, adding another million cases.
Van Rhijn explains, “Twenty years ago, you rarely saw Aspergillus flavus in Europe. Its increasing appearance is a clear indication of shifting environmental conditions favorable to its spread.”
Fungal Resistance: A Compounding Challenge
Aspergillus flavus also presents a unique challenge due to its drug resistance. “Approximately 20% of Aspergillus flavus strains we’ve encountered in patients show resistance to at least one antifungal medication,” says Van Rhijn. Given that only four antifungal drugs are currently available, this resistance significantly undermines treatment efforts. These fungi spread through airborne spores, meaning everyone is at risk simply by breathing.
Medical professionals must be vigilant, as symptoms of fungal infections often resemble those of other conditions like the flu or common cold. “Symptoms such as coughing, fever, difficulty breathing, and general malaise can easily be misattributed,” Van Rhijn warns. “In regions like Friesland or even Scotland, it may take time for doctors to recognize symptoms of a fungal infection.”
