The New South Wales government is considering adding a public holiday to create a long weekend around Anzac Day, following the practice in Western Australia and the Australian Capital Territory.
Consideration for a Long Weekend
Premier Chris Minns stated on Thursday that his government is in discussions regarding the potential public holiday, which would address the situation of Anzac Day falling on a Saturday. Currently, remembrance services will be held nationally on April 25th, but only residents of Western Australia and the ACT will receive an additional day off on the following Monday.
Minns highlighted that this issue extends beyond the current year, noting that residents will also miss a day off next year when Anzac Day does not fall on a Monday. He also stated that New South Wales is “underserved when it comes to public holidays,” compared to other states.
The Premier emphasized the importance of ensuring any new public holiday does not diminish the significance of Anzac Day itself. “I’ve got to have confidence that it’s not going to…if we have a public holiday on the Monday – it doesn’t detract from the salience of the 25th,” he said. “It’s got to be the 25th that’s hugely important.”
To that end, the government intends to consult with the RSL to gauge their views. The Victorian government, which also does not observe a public holiday on the Monday following Anzac Day, and business groups have been contacted for comment.
Currently, New South Wales observes only two additional public holidays – the King’s Birthday in June and Labour Day in October – while most other states offer three or four. Christmas Island observes the most, with six additional holidays, including two for Lunar New Year.
