“I had to leave the operation center to come and get my family and get out of this zone. We’re heading south,” Thompson said in a video published from his vehicle amid heavy traffic congestion.

Social media footage showed multiple residential structures ablaze as residents fled along roadways flanked by active flames. Kerry Gold and her husband, Mike Elsinga, evacuated around 12:30 a.m. after watching flames push past nearby mountains.

“You want to stay here and protect your house, but you also don’t want to get trapped in this,” Elsinga said.
