Article:
A 39-year-old woman from Arnhem has been sentenced to 10 years in prison and mandatory psychiatric treatment (TBS) for setting a fatal fire at her residence in January 2023. The woman had appealed against her initial 9-year sentence, but the court imposed a harsher punishment.
Earlier in the year, the district court had sentenced the woman to 9 years in prison and TBS. She set fire to the improvised dwelling above a barn due to an argument while visiting a friend who lived there. Tragically, both the friend and another visitor were killed.
The arson incident led to numerous neighboring residents evacuating their homes. Seven nearby houses were declared uninhabitable, as reported by Omroep Gelderland.
The appeals court argued that a 12-year prison sentence would have been more appropriate considering the severity of the crime and the "indescribable sorrow" caused to the victims’ families. However, the woman’s mental health issues were taken into account, resulting in a 10-year prison sentence and mandatory psychiatric treatment.
Psychiatric evaluations at the Pieter Baan Center revealed that the woman suffers from personality disorders and struggles to manage stress and tension. Consequently, the court deemed mandatory psychiatric treatment necessary.
Furthermore, the convicted woman was ordered to pay compensation to the victims’ next of kin.
