- Three Lives Lost in Fatal Crash; Family Returns from Pilgrimage
PEKANBARU, Indonesia – A fatal road accident in Pekanbaru has claimed the lives of three family members returning from a pilgrimage. The collision involved a speeding car that crossed into oncoming traffic, resulting in multiple casualties.
The accident occurred at 6:30 AM local time on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, on Jalan Hang Tuah. A Toyota Calya with license plate F 1817 VI, driven by 44-year-old Antoni Romansyah, was traveling at high speed from the direction of Hang Tuah Ujung. Along with Antoni, the car carried two other passengers: 25-year-old Lidia Putri, and 30-year-old Denni.
As the Toyota Calya approached Siaga Medika Clinic 2, Antoni lost control of the vehicle, veering left onto the opposite lane and colliding with a Honda Beat motorbike carrying a family of three: 38-year-old Anton Sujarwo, his 42-year-old wife Afrianti, and their 10-year-old son Aditia.
The impact was severe, causing the family’s motorbike to be dragged along the road before being thrown clear. The Toyota Calya, still moving at a high speed, then struck a second Honda Scoopy motorbike traveling in the opposite direction. The Scoopy was ridden by 22-year-old Dwi Irwanto and his 25-year-old passenger Liani.
Sadly, all three members of the first motorbike’s family—Anton, Afrianti, and Aditia—lost their lives in the crash. Mr. Romansyah and the two cars’ passengers sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment.
"We can confirm that all three victims on the Honda Beat were from the same family," said Alvin, the Head of the Pengadilan Negeri (District Court) Police in Pekanbaru. "The incident is currently under investigation, and the car’s driver has been apprehended for further questioning."
