Title: Miraculous Survival: 19-Year-Old Fights for Life After Tree Branch Impales Him on Vitosa Mountain

In a harrowing turn of events, a 19-year-old Bulgarian man, Kaloyan Pavlov, is fighting for his life after being impaled by a falling tree branch on Mount Vitosa while returning from a Christmas excursion with friends.

The incident, captured on dashcam footage and posted on social media, occurred when a heavily snow-laden branch snapped and plummeted onto Pavlov’s vehicle. The thick branch pierced through the car’s windshield and penetrated Pavlov’s body. He is currently in critical condition at "Pirogov" Hospital, where medical staff are doing everything in their power to save his life.

Pavlov was taken out of a medically induced coma this morning, as reported by his parents to bTV. His father, Petar Pavlov, expressed his gratitude towards the doctors, saying, "I know we’re living a miracle. My son survived by mere millimeters. 50 centimeters could have killed him. The doctors are miracle workers."

The accident has raised questions about the upkeep of the mountain roads, with Pavlov’s father stating, "These issues have been going on for years. Trees fall, people die, but why aren’t these trees trimmed? No one is taking responsibility."

The Sofia Municipality explained to bTV that the road maintenance is carried out with sand and snow removal, which is monitored by the Sofia Municipality Inspectorate. Meanwhile, the maintenance and trimming of trees in the area is the responsibility of the Natural Park "Vitosha." However, the municipality acknowledged that they have a contract for services to maintain and clean the roads on the park’s territory, which commenced on November 1, 2024, and will last until March 31, 2025.

The Natural Park "Vitosha" has been informed and a joint inspection of the roads has been arranged to prevent such accidents in the future. Despite this, critics argue that more could have been done to prevent this near-fatal incident.
