Teen Fights for Life After Tree Branch Impales Car on Bulgarian Mountain Road
A 19-year-old Bulgarian teenager, Kaloyan Pavlov, is fighting for his life after a freak accident on Mount Vitoša near Sofia. In a terrifying incident on Christmas Eve, a heavy snow-laden branch from a tree crashed onto the roof of Pavlov’s car, shattering the windshield and piercing his chest.
The harrowing scene was captured on a dashcam from a following vehicle and shared on social media. Pavlov, with friends, was returning from a holiday trip in the mountains when the tree branch fell onto the road. The vehicle’s camera shows the moment the branch makes impact, followed by screams from the occupants.
Pavlov was rushed to Pirogov Emergency Hospital in critical condition. Medical staff have been battling to stabilize his condition. Today, he was reportedly brought out of an induced coma, with his parents expressing gratitude to the medical team.
His father, Petar Pavlov, told BTV, "We’re living on borrowed time. My son is alive by a matter of centimeters. I’m grateful beyond words to the doctors. It’s a miracle, a true Christmas miracle."
Doctors at Pirogov Emergency Hospital declined to comment on Pavlov’s current condition, citing patient confidentiality. This incident follows a similar one in 2021 where a tree fell on a highway in Bulgaria, injuring several people.
In light of recent incidents, authorities have reiterated the importance of proper maintenance of public lands, especially in high-risk areas like mountainous regions prone to heavy snowfall.
