Tragic End for Veteran Firefighter: Filippo Masi Dies After Car Crash
The wail of ambulances echoed on a quiet Friday night in Milan as responses to a grave incident unfolded. Despite the desperate race to the emergency room, Filippo Masi, the head of the firefighting department at Milan’s provincial command, succumbed to his injuries shortly after admission. The 59-year-old veteran firefighter lost his life in a multi-vehicle crash on the Provincial Road 11 in Settimo Milanese, northwest of Milan, on December 27.
Masi, who had finished his shift at the fire station, was driving towards Vighignolo from the Tangenziale Ovest when the tragic accident occurred around 8:30 PM. The exact sequence of events is under investigation by the local police. Initial reports suggest that Masi was involved in a collision involving multiple vehicles. A fellow firefighter, a colleague of Masi, was among the first responders at the scene and attempted to revive him.
The severity of Masi’s condition prompted an urgent response from the 118 emergency services, with an ambulance and a mobile medical unit dispatched in ‘code red.’ Despite the best efforts of medical personnel, Masi was pronounced dead on arrival at the San Carlo emergency room, after suffering a cardiac arrest.
The loss of Masi has sent shockwaves through the Milan fire department. Those who knew him described him as a man of exceptional humanity, warmth, and professionalism, deeply admired and respected by his colleagues. Masi’s illustrious career spanned over three decades in the service of Milan, starting in 1991. He worked his way up to become the head of the D-watch shift. With retirement just months away in early 2025, his untimely death has left his community devastated.
"Rest in peace," a fellow firefighter eulogized, "a true hero who devoted his life to keeping our city safe."
