Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is scheduled to launch exclusively for the Switch 2 on September 17, following a comprehensive Nintendo Direct presentation that detailed the strategy RPG’s mechanics, classes, and narrative structure.
Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave Launching on Switch 2
Developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo, the game centers on the Heroic Games held in Dagsion, the capital city of the Dagdan Empire. Warriors from across the land travel to compete in the gladiator-style tournament for the chance to win a single wish from Solel, the current ruler of the Dagdan Empire and successor to Dagda, the empire’s first and founding king.

Parallel Protagonists and a Five-Year Time Jump
Players step into the roles of four distinct heroes who enter the tournament: Cai, Dietrich, Theodora, and Leda. Cai sets out from the village of Ribeira with childhood friends to free his imprisoned father; Dietrich enters to satisfy his love for battle with new allies; Theodora leads veteran retainers to defend her kingdom and restore the honor of her goddess; and Leda leaves her life of prestige to seek revenge against her father’s murderer.
Unlike previous entries in the series, players can switch between all four protagonists at any time with saved individual progress, allowing their stories to be experienced in parallel. However, the narrative is set in the past. Five years after the Heroic Games, the Dagdan Empire faces destruction at the hands of the revived demon god Balor, and the four heroes have vanished.
The true protagonist is a nameless, white-haired hero whose canon name is Eshmel, summoned by the progenitor god Sothis to save the world. Guided by the goddess Fortuna, Eshmel can use time-traveling powers to alter the fates of the four heroes and prevent the end of the world.
Combat, Classes, and Free Time Activities
Combat features grid-based strategic battles where units utilize swords, gauntlets, spears, axes, bows, and magic. Unique weapons include swords that call down lightning and gauntlets resembling firearms equipped with laser sights. Characters can execute combat arts that consume weapon durability, while the four main protagonists possess powerful Blaze Arts that trade health points for devastating effects, such as Cai’s area-of-effect fireballs, Dietrich’s teleportation, Leda’s monster-summoning vihuela music, and Theodora’s long-range rock-slinging.
Players can also rewind time after any move to correct mistakes. Class progression is divided into three tiers:
- Beginner: Foundational roles including gladiators, diviners, and ornius riders.
- Advanced: Master classes such as heavily armored, highly mobile cataphracts, spear-and-white-magic guardians, and elephant riders.
- Specialty: Over ten classes including armored knights, obstacle-jumping wing soldiers, and line-striking charioteers.
Between matches, players engage in Free Time activities in Dagsion and across the world map. Activities include training at the arena, shopping for weapons, volunteering at Temple Row for temporary stat buffs, completing quests, recruiting warriors, and exploring dungeons where encounters unfold as traditional turn-based battles.
