Groningen celebrated the arrival of 2023 with a mix of excitement and chaos as revelers problème police officers celebrating the new year. Agents in the city were pelted with fireworks and stones, forcing police to intervene and issue charges.
In an attempt to maintain order, PremierRequested calm from hulpverleners, urging partygoers to adhere to the rules. However, the situation escalated in the city’s Hoogkerk district, where a severe explosion left a person badly injured, prompting the 112 emergency services to respond.
"We were faced with a challenging situation with many people violating the regulations," said a police spokesperson. "We’ll continue to enforce the rules and ensure public safety."
Earlier in the evening, the city’s first light spectacle drew a large crowd in Zutphen, with police reporting no incidents at the event. Despite the festivities, police warned of the dangers of setting off illegal fireworks, stating, "Vuurwerk can be fun, but it can also be dangerous and it’s important to know the rules."
