New Taipei’s Spectacular "1314 Fireworks" Show Features Unforgettable "Fireworks Boat Ablaze" Moment; Organizer Responds
NEW TAIPEI, Taiwan — New Taipei City’s dazzling "1314 Fireworks" display over the Keelung River during the New Year’s Eve countdown was nothing short of extraordinary. However, it was a brief, intense moment that captured the public’s attention: the "fireworks boat" engulfed in flames.
As the clock struck midnight, thousands of spectators cheered as fireworks illuminated the night sky, marking the arrival of 2023. The highlight of the show, a massive boat-shaped firework structure, descended from a bridge, trailing an impressive cascade of sparks.
Suddenly, something unexpected happened. The boat’s flames intensified and spread, with thick smoke billowing into the air. Although the spectacle lasted only a few seconds, onlookers gasped in awe and fear, filming the dramatic scene on their phones.
Local media outlets captured the moment, with TVBS reporting that witnesses were startled by the intense flames, describing the scene as "like a movie" and "heart-stopping."
New Taipei City Mayor Hou Yu-ih, when asked about the incident, replied, "This is the first time we’ve seen such an intense reaction to our fireworks display. We’ll carefully review the safety measures and continue to improve for future events. Our goal is to create an even better show for New Taipei residents and visitors in 2025."
Organizers of the event swiftly addressed the incident. A spokesperson acknowledged the mishap, attributing it to a technical glitch, and assured the public that safety is their top priority. They added that all fireworks were controlled remotely, and the boat structure was designed to self-destruct after the finale, ensuring no residual fire risks.
Despite the brief hiccup, the 13-minute, 14-second fireworks extravaganza, titled "Radiant New Taipei," was a smashing success. The show was choreographed to a lively BGM, featuring popular K-pop hits like "Dynamite" by BTS, a nod to Taiwan’s love for Korean culture. The event concluded with a heartwarming dedication to the resilience of New Taipei City residents and their hopes for a prosperous new year.
