CDC Reports Rare Mutations in Bird Flu Virus in First U.S. Severe Case

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced that a patient infected with avian flu in the United States has tested positive for mutations in the virus’s hemaglutinin (HA) gene. This gene plays a crucial role in the virus’s attachment to host cells.

Despite these mutations, the risk to the general public from the outbreak remains low, according to the CDC. The agency reported the first severe case of the virus in the U.S. last week, involving a resident of Louisiana over the age of 65 with severe respiratory conditions.

The patient was infected with the D1.1 genotype of the virus, which has been recently detected in wild birds and backyard poultry in the U.S., not the B3.13 genotype associated with dairy cow cases and some backyard birds in multiple states.

The mutations observed in the Louisiana patient are rare but have been reported in other countries, typically during severe infections. A similar mutation was also detected in another severe case in British Columbia, Canada.

There has been no evidence of the virus being transmitted from the Louisiana patient to others, the CDC confirmed.

While the public health risk remains low, these developments highlight the importance of continued vigilance and monitoring to detect and respond to any changes in the virus.
