A groundbreaking advance in medical science has been achieved in the UK, with the successful use of ‘lungs in a box’ technology for a double lung transplant. Known as ex-vivo lung perfusion (EVLP), this innovative technique has the potential to boost the number of available donor organs, offering new hope to those awaiting life-saving transplants.

The first patient to benefit from this procedure in the UK is Daniel Evans-Smith, a 49-year-old man diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The operation was performed at Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in Cambridge, opening the door to wider use of this technology, as reported by BBC.

How Does EVLP Work?

The EVLP technology allows the reconditioning of donor lungs initially deemed unsuitable for transplant. After removal, lungs are stored on ice and transported to the receiving hospital, where they are connected to a system that ventilates and perfuses them, mimicking human body functions.

Liquid is used to keep the lungs in optimal condition and to help restore normal functions. This process can last up to four hours, during which doctors can administer short therapies and thoroughly evaluate the lungs’ condition. If the organs respond well during the three-hour monitoring period, they are re-cooled and prepared for transplant.

Dr. Jas Parmar, a Royal Papworth transplant consultant, hailed EVLP as a major advancement: "This technology allows us to deliver higher-quality organs to patients on the waiting list, significantly changing the organ donation landscape in the UK."

Patient Impact and Future Outlook

Evans-Smith, who had experienced five lung collapses in less than a year, received news of compatible lungs while hospitalized. Post-surgery, he underwent a rehabilitation program and returned home for recovery.

"The transplant has completely changed my life," Evans-Smith declared. "I no longer have respiratory infections or the symptoms I used to struggle with. I can walk longer distances, climb hills without effort, and don’t need to rest as often."

With demand for lung transplants outstripping available organs in the UK, technologies like EVLP could potentially increase the chances of those on the waiting list by making initially rejected lungs eligible for transplant. This breakthrough procedure opens new avenues for saving lives and reducing wait times, further redefining medical possibilities.
