Researchers tracking its orbit for 19 years through the FOSSIL (Formation of the Outer Solar System: An Icy Legacy) program found that Ammonite follows an extremely elongated orbit with a perihelion of 66 au. Computer simulations run by the research team indicate that Ammonite has maintained a stable orbit for at least 4.5 billion years, filling a previously unexplained gap in the distribution of distant solar system objects.
