From Finnish Snows to National Glory: The Enduring Legacy of St. Lawrence Distance Running

The 1987 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships weren’t just a race; they were a crucible forged in blizzard conditions. For St. Lawrence University, it marked a turning point, a moment when a program went from overlooked to feared, thanks to the remarkable Jukka Tammisuo.

A Champion’s Journey: From Finland to Canton

Jukka Tammisuo’s path to St. Lawrence was unconventional. A native of Finland with a background in soccer, ice hockey, and cross-country skiing, he was encouraged by American steeplechaser John Underwood to consider collegiate running in the United States. Initially hesitant, a nudge from his coach – who regretted not taking a scholarship to Oregon himself – set Tammisuo on a course for Canton, New York.

His arrival didn’t immediately spark belief. Teammates questioned the hype surrounding a recruit from so far away. But those doubts quickly evaporated. “When he got here and we saw him in the first couple workouts, it didn’t grab long for us to see that this guy’s the real deal,” recalled Mike Howard ’87, a teammate who later coached at St. Lawrence for nearly 30 years. Tammisuo’s debut – an 8:19 in the 3,000-meter run – spoke volumes.

Dominance on the Track: A Foundation for Cross Country Success

Before conquering the cross country course, Tammisuo established himself as a force on the track. He captured the NCAA Championship in the 1,500-meter run in 1986, showcasing not only speed but also a tactical intelligence that would become his hallmark. He repeated this feat in 1987, winning back-to-back 1,500 titles.

Tammisuo’s signature tactic was patience. He didn’t rush to the front, instead observing, waiting, and unleashing a decisive kick when the moment was right. “I trained my kick a lot,” Tammisuo explained. “I was fairly confident I could take it.”

The 1987 Championship: A Defining Moment

Returning to St. Lawrence for a final season of eligibility, Tammisuo set his sights on the cross country national title. Undefeated leading up to the championship, he found himself in a tight race at the NCAA meet, battling Tom Morris from the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point.

As the leaders approached the final hill, Tammisuo remained patient, conserving energy. Howard observed, “If he comes off that hill with the pack, he’s going to win. He’s got a kick you can’t match.” Tammisuo delivered, surging past Morris in the final strides to win by just three-tenths of a second.

A Legacy Continues: Inspiring Future Generations

Tammisuo’s impact extended far beyond his own victories. He elevated St. Lawrence distance running to the national stage, setting a standard for future Saints to follow. Deb Lyndaker ’97, a former All-American and coach at St. Lawrence, noted that his performances are “iconic” and his stories are “legendary.”

Recently, Tammisuo’s influence was felt again through Nick, a current St. Lawrence runner. Tammisuo provided guidance and encouragement, sharing insights into race strategy and the importance of a strong kick. Nick went on to win the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championship in 2025, echoing Tammisuo’s success.

“Congratulations Nick,” Tammisuo texted after the race. “Tactically very nice run… You did not get nervous from the movement and concentrated for the kick. Nice. Super proud!!! This is the inspiration the program needs. This will motivate runners for decades. Beautiful!”
