Article:

Brace yourselves for an impending winter chill, as the first snow of 2025 is set to grace the Netherlands this weekend. After a spell of sunshine and scattered winter showers, the weekend promises a blanket of snow, with the greatest chance of a winter wonderland in the northern regions of the country.

Starting Friday, expect frequent showers, with a possibility of wintry precipitation. The heaviest downpour could leave a thin layer of snow, around a few centimeters, but it’s unlikely to stick thanks to daytime temperatures hovering just above freezing. The Veluwe, Utrechtse Heuvelrug, Sallandse Heuvelrug, and Zuid-Limburg regions may hold onto their snow a bit longer.

As we move into Saturday night, a few more rain or snow showers are forecast, with temperatures hovering near the freezing point. As the skies clear, any damp roads could freeze, leading to slippery conditions.

Saturday will see a return to sunshine in the morning, followed by increasing cloudiness from the south. It will be breezy and chilly, with temperatures only reaching 3°C.

The biggest wintery event of the weekend arrives Sunday night, as a large weather system moves in from the south. Initially, snow will fall in the southern half of the country, but it will quickly switch to rain, limiting snow accumulation to about 3 centimeters. As the system moves north, it will encounter cooler air, leading to several hours of continuous snowfall. The northern regions could see accumulations of 3 to 7 centimeters, providing the best chance for snow games.

A significant weather shift awaits on Sunday, with milder air pushing in. Temperatures will rise, melting the freshly fallen snow and potentially causing a brief icy spell. Come Monday, the mercury will climb to 10 to 14°C, signaling a marked contrast from the weekend’s freezing temperatures. After Monday, temperatures will gradually decrease once again.

So, gear up for the first taste of winter this year, and stay safe on the frosty roads. Let’s hope the snow brings joy and plenty of fun winter activities!
