Shooting Outside Residence Halls on Boisseau Street
Law enforcement officers responded to the 3300 block of Boisseau Street at approximately 1:28 a.m. after gunfire erupted near the university’s Quad Annexes student housing complex. According to a university official, arriving officers discovered five individuals suffering from gunshot wounds outside the campus dormitories.

All five victims were immediately transported to area hospitals for treatment. While initial reports from the university indicated in a 5:56 a.m. ET post that none of the injuries appeared life-threatening, Chesterfield County police later confirmed that one victim initially listed as having life-threatening injuries had been upgraded to critical condition. The remaining four victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Multi-Agency Investigation and Active Search for Suspects
Investigators are searching for multiple individuals in connection with the violence. The university stated via X that the shooting involved “multiple suspects” while urging students and staff to steer clear of the area. As the university noted in its statement, The campus community should continue to avoid the area and follow all law enforcement instructions.
VSU Police also posted on X requesting that the public avoid the area while police remained on the scene.
The Chesterfield County Police Department is leading the ongoing inquiry alongside the VSU Police Department. Federal and regional partners, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, joined local authorities on campus to assist with the investigation. Virginia State Police deferred questions to local police, noting that local authorities are leading the investigation.
Campus Reopens Following Lifted Lockdown as Semester Nears
The violence struck the public HBCU just as students were returning to campus. Residence halls opened to returning students on Friday for the school’s summer 2026 semester, and many students had just completed the university’s New Trojans Experience
for incoming students. According to the university’s online calendar, the semester is set to begin on Monday, August 17.
Although the campus initially went into lockdown, officials say the campus lockdown has now been lifted as of 8:22 a.m. However, a significant law enforcement presence remains on campus in Ettrick, Virginia — a public university with about 5,700 students located about 24 to 25 miles south of the state capital of Richmond.
