Florence Pugh Stars in Netflix’s Reimagined ‘East of Eden

Netflix premiered its seven-episode adaptation of John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel East of Eden on October 1, 2026. Created by Zoe Kazan and starring Florence Pugh as the complex antagonist Cathy Ames, the series reimagines the classic saga by centering Cathy’s perspective and exploring the human capacity for change.

Florence Pugh’s Portrayal of Cathy Ames

In this new adaptation, Florence Pugh takes on the role of Cathy Ames, a character traditionally viewed as a villain. Zoe Kazan, who wrote the seven-part series and served as showrunner, identified Pugh as the only actor capable of capturing the character’s duality. I didn’t have a backup, Kazan stated regarding the casting process. I didn’t have another person that I thought would be just as good. She is the exact right person to play Cathy.

Kazan sought to move beyond the label often attached to Cathy, instead leaning into Steinbeck’s own notes about the character. The series examines Cathy’s survival instincts and her icy or steely exterior, which Kazan felt Pugh embodied. Pugh, who also served as an executive producer, noted that the role helped boost her confidence.

Zoe Kazan’s Personal Connection to the Steinbeck Classic

For Zoe Kazan, the project is deeply personal. Her grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the well-known 1955 film adaptation of East of Eden, which starred James Dean. While she felt the weight of that legacy, she told Mamamia that the story’s pull was undeniable.

Kazan structured the series around Steinbeck’s letters to his editor, Pascal Covici, where the author grappled with the monster he was writing. By focusing on the humanity of the characters, the series attempts to explore the choice to overcome sin.

Series Earns High Ratings for Adapting Entire Novel

The series has garnered significant critical attention, currently holding an 85 percent freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The adaptation is noted for its departure from the 1955 film, which only covered the final portion of the book. By adapting the entire novel, the 2026 series provides a broader scope for the Trask family history. Pugh’s involvement as an executive producer—a role she began in 2020—was described by the actress as helping boost her confidence. She really wanted me to be a part of the process; she wanted to create it with me, Pugh said of her collaboration with Kazan.

Thematic Focus on Agency and Choice

A central theme of the 2026 series is the idea that individuals have the power to choose differently despite their pasts or inherited burdens. Kazan, now a mother, noted that her perspective on the material shifted significantly from when she first read the book at age 15. The series aims to provide viewers with a new perspective on Cathy Ames, challenging them to see her as a person rather than an embodiment of evil.

As the series streams globally, Kazan and Pugh hope the work will encourage audiences to reconsider their own biases. The series remains available to stream on Netflix as of early October 2026.
