Florida Space Coast Floods After Historic 28-Inch Rainfall Event

Up to 28 inches of rain drenched Florida’s Space Coast between Sunday afternoon and Monday evening, delivering roughly half a year’s normal precipitation in a single downpour that radar estimates classified as a one-in-1,000-year event.

Emergency Declarations and Rescue Operations in Brevard County

Governor Ron DeSantis issued a state of emergency across seven counties—Brevard, DeSoto, Hardee, Highlands, Indian River, Martin and St. Lucie—to expedite resources as floodwaters swamped neighborhoods and turned local roads into canals. In Melbourne, 11.51 inches of rain fell on Monday, marking the wettest single day in the city’s history since record-keeping began in 1937. Coastal areas just south of Palm Bay, such as Valkaria, recorded more than 20 inches in 12 hours, easily clearing the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration threshold for a 1,000-year rainfall event.

Emergency crews deployed airboats and high-water vehicles across submerged streets. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission rescued 60 people, while sheriff’s deputies assisted more than 100 others trapped by rising waters. The National Weather Service warned of extremely dangerous and life-threatening conditions across the region, while Palm Bay Police PIO Vincent Galioto confirmed one adult male died in the Monday floods. City of Palm Bay officials later confirmed a second storm-related death, identifying the victims as 34-year-old Joshua Bennett and 78-year-old Archie Richards.

Storms Inundate Infrastructure and Disrupt Communities

The torrential downpours followed a separate severe soaking in Palm Beach County on Sunday, where up to 17 inches fell over six hours. An airport in the county recorded 7.39 inches of rain on November 2, surpassing a mark set in 1888. The Palm Beach County Emergency Operations Center activated at a Level 2, and public schools across Brevard County remained closed while several polling sites were moved for Election Day due to extreme flooding. Ty Hayes, whose Palm Bay home was flooded when water gushed inside, recalled losing four family vehicles to the surge.

We’re all glad that we’re alive and everything like this, you know, Hayes said. But that’s an afterthought when you have nothing left. Neighbor Ariana Reyes watched the rapid inundation unfold, noting that the canal filled so fast that a neighbor’s car was swept away immediately, followed by others. In the Foxhall and Visions at Willow Pond communities near West Palm Beach, residents like Donovan Simpson and Bnjy Prince described waist-deep water surrounding homes that made streets resemble isolated islands. I’ve never seen nothing like this. I’ve lived in Florida my whole life, Simpson said.
