Botosani, Romania – The flu season continues to reap victims, even as the festive season of Christmas approaches. In the week of December 16-22, a total of 14 flu cases have been reported, according to local health authorities.
Of these, 3 cases were recorded among individuals aged between 15 and 49 years. Meanwhile, 5 cases involved children aged between 0 and 4 years, and 6 were among those aged between 5 and 14 years. Thankfully, none of the infected persons required hospitalization.
Medical professionals warn that the virus is likely to spread rapidly with the drop in temperatures and encourage Botosani residents to protect themselves and consider getting the flu shot. The District Sanitary PH unit (DSP) Botosani highlights that the risk of complications is particularly high among the elderly and children, and advises caution.
Multiple Hospitalizations Due to Pneumonia and Viral Infections
Over the same period, 79 Botosani residents were hospitalized after being diagnosed with pneumonia and viral infections. Statistics show that 313 people in the region were diagnosed with pneumonia in the week of December 16-22, with 66 requiring hospitalization. The age group most affected was 5-14 years, with 86 cases, 17 of which required hospitalization.
Pneumonia is a severe lung infection caused by various pathogens including bacteria, viruses, or fungi. Agent, patient age, and environment play a significant role in its causation. Common symptoms include fever, shivering, coughing, and breathing difficulties (dyspnea).
Scores of Botosani Residents Diagnosed with Viral Infections

Unlike pneumonia cases, the number hospitalized is significantly lower, with 804 cases reported and just 13 requiring hospitalization. The 5-14 age group was most affected, with 213 cases.
