East Sussex Coroner Hears Inquest Into Trevor Dietz Death

Trevor Dietz, the 47-year-old manager of Irish rock band Fontaines DC, died from multiple injuries after a fall from height in East Sussex on June 7 following a long battle with mental health issues, an inquest has found. Assistant Coroner Rachel Redman concluded at East Sussex Coroner’s Court that Mr Dietz died by suicide, noting that he was dedicated and devoted to his band.

Family Testify to Humanitarian Passions and Mental Health Struggles

During the court proceedings attended by his sister and partner, with his brother watching via videolink, the coroner read a statement from Mr Dietz’s sister, Helena Prentice. She described him as an “exceptionally intelligent, kind and compassionate man” who had suffered from “recurrent anxiety” for many years. The court heard that Mr Dietz felt “overwhelmed” by his mental health problems and had grown “increasingly distressed” by global events, particularly in Gaza, finding it difficult to accept the suffering of innocent people as a lifelong campaigner for Palestinian human rights and against genocide.

Fontaines DC and Kneecap Pay Tribute to the Sixth Member

Following his death, the band shared a statement on June 9 calling him “the sixth member of the band” and stating they had never known Fontaines DC without him. They wrote: “We are utterly heartbroken to let you know that on Sunday June 7th we lost our dear friend and manager Trevor.” They added: “Trevor was beside us from the beginning of our journey as a band, we have never known Fontaines DC without him, the sixth member of the band.” He was fearless in his beliefs. We will miss him always.” RIP Trev.” Assistant Coroner Rachel Redman stated: “He clearly was really, really dedicated and devoted to his band and it seemed to be a mutual feeling.” She also said: “I’m sure that they and all of the musicians he worked with, will be lost without him.” Irish hip-hop trio Kneecap also honored him during their headline set at Crystal Palace Park later in June, posting Gaelic tributes online after the first photo in the band’s online memorial showed Mr Dietz wearing a Kneecap T-shirt. The fellow Irish musicians’ official page commented: “Suaimhneas síoraí dá anam, a chara”, translated from Gaelic as “Rest in peace, my friend”. Kneecap rapper Móglaí Bap also wrote: “Suaimhneas síoraí Trev.”
