Subhead: Search and rescue teams recover body of 31-year-old man from South Korea, who was reported missing during mountain climb.
A grim discovery was made on Friday, February 3, when the body of a missing South Korean national was found near Gunung Agung in Karangasem, Bali. Kyung Dam Oh, a 31-year-old man, was reported missing after attempting to climb the iconic and holy mountain.
Nyoman Sidakarya, the head of Denpasar Search and Rescue Office, confirmed that Oh’s body was found at an altitude of 2,200 meters above sea level, around 10:00 AM WITA. The victim was discovered in a prone position, approximately 100 meters from the Pasar Agung trail.
sidakarya stated that Oh had sustained injuries to his head, supposedly from impact with rocks. They suspect the cause of death to be a fall.
I Gusti Ngurah Eka Wiadnya, the coordinator of Karangasem Search and Rescue, echoed this sentiment, stating that the fall was the likely cause of Oh’s death. Oh’s body has been evacuated to the Karangasem District General Hospital for further examination.
The South Korean national had begun his climb on Wednesday, January 1, with the last known contact with Oh received on Thursday, January 2. The Indonesian Consulate in South Korea was subsequently notified and immediately alerted search and rescue teams.
Mount Agung, which stands at 3,031 meters, is both an active volcano and a sacred site for Balinese Hindus. While it draws thousands of climbers each year, the terrain is treacherous and weather conditions can change rapidly.
