French surveyors record Mont Blanc peak 1.29 metres lower

“Regarding ice mass, it is essential to distinguish between changes in surface altitude and changes in the total volume or mass of ice,” a spokesperson for the Union Nationale des Géomètres-Experts said, as Western Europe’s highest mountain measured 4,807.47 metres above sea level following an expedition last month, The Guardian reported.

French surveyors record a lower peak height

The new calculation puts the peak of Mont Blanc in France 1.29 metres lower than it stood in measurements recorded during 2025. Chartered surveyors from the Union Nationale des Géomètres-Experts (UNGE) and the Ordre des Géomètres-Experts have monitored the summit regularly since 2001 using precise satellite technology alongside drones to model the snow and ice cap.

Data shows the summit has shrunk back by 3.43 metres since reaching a high of 4,810.90 metres in 2007. Despite that long-term drop, the latest height stands 1.88 metres greater than the reading recorded in 2023, when the peak hit the lowest levels in recent memory.

Surveyors caution against linking height fluctuations to ice loss

Surveyors cautioned against linking year-to-year fluctuations in the mountain’s height directly to the rapid loss of Alpine ice caused by fossil fuel pollution. “An increase in summit altitude does not necessarily mean that the mountain has gained ice mass, nor does it contradict the documented retreat of Alpine glaciers,” the UNGE spokesperson said.

Climate breakdown fueled western Europe’s hottest summer on record this year, scarring Alpine regions and melting ice at a rapid pace. Swiss glaciologists warned earlier this month of an explosion of melt rates, confirming that one-fifth of the country’s ice disappeared over the past five years, with a 5.5% loss in volume occurring between 2025 and 2026.

High-Altitude Observations from Survey Leaders

Jean des Garets, president of the Haute-Savoie departmental chamber of surveyors and leader of the Mont Blanc expedition, stated that the warming trend remains visible to the naked eye across the rest of the Alpine massif. However, he noted that climate change does not yet appear to exert the same impact above 4,000 metres.

“When we climb, we pass by the Brigade Blanche hut before the Tête-Rousse glacier,” he said in comments reported by French television channel TF1. “We’ve seen that the glacier has moved up. It has literally melted before our very eyes and now in some places we’re crossing a stream instead of a glacier.”
