In a recent display of cultural harmony and inclusivity, renowned Indonesian film director Hanung Bramantyo captured attention as he visited the Vatican City with his family during a Christmas mass. The visit came shortly after the family completed their Umrah pilgrimage.

Through an Instagram video, Bramantyo shared his family’s experience at the iconic St. Peter’s Basilica, the largest church in Italy and a significant landmark for Catholics worldwide. "We’re heading to St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City," Bramantyo said in the video, "Here we are, with our children, visiting the largest church in Italy, perhaps even the world. This is where Pope Francis resides."

Despite not being Catholic, Bramantyo’s family explored the basilica as tourists, observing the mass from the sidelines. "We’re just tourists, looking around, a bit lost," he humorously remarked. The director emphasized that the basilica is open to visitors of all nationalities and faiths, making it a symbol of unity and diversity.

Bramantyo, known for his film ‘Ipar is Death,’ shared that he comes from a multi-faith family. "My mother is of Chinese descent from Salatiga and Tegal, practicing Buddhism. My father, a convert, has family members who are Catholic, Christian, and Confucian," he explained.

The director also shared that his family celebrates both Christmas and Eid al-Fitr, demonstrating their commitment to cultural understanding and harmony. "Every December, we gather with our relatives in Salatiga and Semarang to celebrate Christmas. During Eid, we visit our relatives in Yogyakarta," Bramantyo said, clarifying that they do not participate in the religious ceremonies of other faiths.

Bramantyo’s visit to the Vatican City serves as a reminder of the importance of cultural understanding, inclusivity, and harmony, especially in today’s diverse world. His actions reflect his commitment to promoting these values, both on and off-screen.
