UkraineBulgaria: NATO Agreement Stands, Bulgaria Alone in Disagreement

Bulgaria and Hungary remain the sole NATO members without a agreement with Ukraine, adding complexity to a conflict-torn region. President Zelensky expressed understanding towards Bulgaria’s ongoing review, while critics at home argue that Bulgaria’s stance undermines Ukraine’s sovereignty.

Stefan Yanev, Bulgaria’s defense minister, explained, "We are reviewing the agreement with Ukraine due to concerns about its compatibility with our constitutional order." However, many Bulgarians view this as a delay tactic, with some accusing the government of bending to Russian influence.

The agreement, dubbed "Eternal Friendship," aims to strengthen military cooperation and NATO’s Eastern Flank. Ukraine, eager to join the alliance, sees Bulgaria’s hesitation as a roadblock in its Euro-Atlantic integration. Bulgaria’s overweight in the upcoming NATO summit has made the situation increasingly tense.

Last week, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry urged Bulgaria to ratify the agreement swiftly. Bulgarian MP Kirkina Zibareva argued, "We’re playing games with Ukraine’s sovereignty. Bulgaria must prioritize Ukraine’s interests, not domestic political convenience."

Meanwhile, Hungarian-Ukrainian relations have also soured due to the stalled agreement. Budapest’s position has remained unchanged, with Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó insisting, "We won’t ratify until the border issue with Ukraine is resolved." The border dispute, lingering since Ukraine’s independence, has added further strain to their diplomatic relations.

As the NATO summit approaches, all eyes are on Bulgaria and Hungary. Ukraine, eager to solidify its ties with the West, hopes for a positive breakthrough. However, the shadow of Russian influence and domestic politics in Bulgaria and Hungary continues to cast doubt on this possibility.
