Garden City High School Student Wins Prestigious German Study Trip
Susanna Phinney, a 10th grade student at Garden City High School (GCHS), has been awarded an all-expense-paid summer study trip to Germany. The opportunity comes after her success on the 2026 National German Exam for High School Students.
National German Exam Success
Over 12,000 students participated in the National German Exam, sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG). Susanna Phinney qualified for the trip by achieving a high score on the Level 3 exam. She then successfully completed essay questions in both German and English, followed by an interview with a committee of high school teachers and college professors specializing in German.
A 66-Year Tradition of Cultural Exchange
Susanna is one of 36 students nationwide selected to receive this award. The study trip, now in its 66th year, is funded by a grant from the Federal Republic of Germany. It includes round-trip airfare, a homestay with a German family, and visits to culturally and historically significant sites.
The Importance of German Language Learning
Michael Shaughnessy, Executive Director of the AATG, emphasized the value of the program, stating, “This year’s prize winners are some of the finest students in the US…The prize is a great reward for excellence in learning German—and the best way to better gain to know a fascinating language and culture through firsthand experiences living with a German family and attending school.”
GCHS German Program Recognized
Susanna Phinney is a student of Frau Basile, the German teacher at GCHS. The AATG, founded in 1926, supports German teachers at all levels and promotes the study of German language, literature, and culture.
The Growing Demand for Bilingual Professionals
The demand for bilingual professionals is steadily increasing in a globalized world. Germany, as a leading economic power in Europe, offers significant opportunities for individuals proficient in the German language. Industries such as engineering, automotive, pharmaceuticals, and finance actively seek employees with German language skills.
Expanding Opportunities in German-Speaking Countries
Beyond Germany, proficiency in German opens doors to opportunities in Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and Belgium. These countries boast high standards of living and thriving economies.
