Bulgaria‘s Old Calendarists: A Comical Reaction and 30 Years of Unchanged Divide

The brouhaha over the registration of Bulgaria’s Old Calendarist Church has sparked a rather amusing reaction, with renowned theologian Georgi Todorov dismissing any notion of Bulgarians joining or leaving this ‘schismatic’ structure due to its registration. In an interview with Lily Marinova on "FAKTI" studio and "Dialogue" show, Todorov highlighted the marginal nature of Old Calendarists, stating that they have no property claims or aspirations for the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.

"Old Calendarists are and always will be marginal. They can’t and won’t inherit any properties or have pretensions towards the Bulgarian Orthodox Church," Todorov clarified. "Even if they were registered as the Bulgarian Orthodox Church – Bulgarian Patriarchate, it would be an entirely different scenario. Patriarch Maxim’s predecessor, Patriarch Pimen, attempted this and it led to a schism, but his intentions were different, aiming to replace Patriarch Maxim."
