New Year’s Hypocrisy: Envoy Mitrofanova Declares for a ‘More Just Global Order’

In an unexpected New Year message, Russia‘s envoy to Bulgaria, Elena Mitrofanova, has praised Moscow’s foreign policy while taking potshots at Sofia. Published today, her message hails Russia’s leadership of BRIKS and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), but sternly notes that bilateral relations remain frosty.

"Unfortunately, positive changes in Russia-Bulgaria relations did not occur last year," Mitrofanova laments, citing the "freezing of official contacts." She’s thanked those who’ve sought to preserve "our common history and heritage," a veiled reference to Russian-imposed memorials on Bulgarian soil.

Amusingly, her "New Year and Christmas greetings" arrive late, as Bulgaria marked Christmas last week. It seems Mitrofanova’s preferred it celebrate the Russian Orthodox Christmas. She even forgets to mention Bulgaria’s name, instead rambling about an undefined "more just global order."

Russia, she boasts, is "the world’s fourth-largest economy by purchasing power parity," besting Japan and Germany. Yet, as bombs rain on Ukraine, her talk of fairness rings hollow.

Mitrofanova’s self-congratulatory extravaganza is unlikely to thaw frozen Bulgarian hearts. Her arrogant tone, surface-level diplomacy, and tardy greetings read more like a rant than a message of goodwill.
