Chinese hospitals are battling a surge in flu cases, with patients enduring long wait times and overcrowded clinics, fueling concerns of a resurgent COVID-19 outbreak. Videos circulating on social media show lengthy queues at hospitals, with parents accompanying children and adults alike, all suffering from fever and flu-like symptoms.
In a post on the @COVID19_disease account on the Chinese social media platform X, numerous images illustrated the overwhelmed hospitals. "BREAKING: Hospitals in China are overwhelmed due to severe cases of flu, including Influenza A and HMPV, reminiscent of the COVID-19 peak three years ago," the post from Saturday, December 28, read.
The viral post sparks speculations about a possible new wave of COVID-19, causing public alarm due to fears of a highly dangerous and potentially deadly virus. However, medical sources have identified this outbreak as Influenza A and human metapneumovirus, causing symptoms similar to COVID-19.
Popular blogger "Please Fei Ge" revealed that after attending an event in Guangzhou, he and his wife started exhibiting high fevers, with symptoms such as body aches and headaches mirroring previous COVID-19 experiences.
Zhumadian Central Hospital’s chief physician reported that influenza-related hospitalizations had surged up to tenfold in December compared to the previous month. Despite the significant increase in influenza virus detections and the onset of the seasonal epidemic, COVID-19 infection rates remain low.
"The increase in winter and spring will likely bring various communicable respiratory diseases to China," warned Kan Biao, director of the Institute of Infectious Diseases at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
The National Health Commission has issued warnings about the high incidence of influenza and fever, emphasizing that no specific treatment or vaccine exists for this suspected COVID-19-like disease. As the winter season progresses, Chinese health officials urge vigilance and proactive measures to prevent the spread of these infections.
