Mbakwe suffered a scary head collision with a teammate during the third quarter of Saturday night’s 45-24 loss to Tennessee at Bobby Dodd Stadium, but he quickly assured fans on social media that he is fine and feeling well.

The Georgia Tech football program confirmed Sunday that Jaylen Mbakwe left Grady Memorial Hospital after being evaluated overnight for precautionary reasons. The defensive back spent Saturday night under observation following a third-quarter collision during the Yellow Jackets’ 45-24 defeat against No. 18 Tennessee.
Play stopped at the 14:17 mark of the third quarter and UT driving with a 24-10 lead. Mbakwe collided head-first with the knee of Georgia Tech defensive end Jordan Walker, who also exited with a lower body injury, during a play. Training staff tended to Mbakwe on the field for a few minutes before calling for a stretcher to take him off the field. Walker was carried from the field with an apparent knee injury while training staff moved to immobilize Mbakwe. Mbakwe was taken by ambulance to Grady Memorial Hospital, two miles away from the stadium.
As medical personnel wheeled him toward the tunnel, Mbakwe offered reassuring signals to the crowd by moving both his hands as he left the field, signaling to the crowd with a thumbs-up and gripping a trainer’s hand.

Mbakwe joined Georgia Tech in the offseason after spending the first two seasons of his college career at Alabama, where he played in 22 games over two seasons in various roles as a cornerback, wide receiver and punt returner.
