Germany‘s Foreign and Defense Ministers Propose €3B Ukraine Aid Boost; Scholz’s Chancellery Blocks Initiative

In a significant development, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and Defense Minister Boris Pistorius have urged the allocation of an additional €3 billion in aid to Ukraine ahead of the upcoming federal elections. However, Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s office has reportedly blocked this proposal, as per a report by Der Spiegel.

Citing the deteriorating situation in Ukraine over the past few months, Baerbock and Pistorius emphasized the need for increased support. They also expressed uncertainty about future U.S. military aid under a potential Trump administration after the American presidential elections.

Scholz’s chancellery, however, has indicated that it views the €4 billion earmarked for 2025 and the €50 billion credit extended by G7 countries as sufficient. The latter, backed by frozen Russian assets, would be used to service the debt.

The call for enhanced aid comes amid preparations for early Bundestag elections scheduled for February 23, 2025. The vote was triggered following a no-confidence motion against Scholz after his decision to dismiss Finance Minister Christian Lindner, the leader of the Free Democratic Party (FDP), leading to the collapse of the ruling coalition.

Sources close to the matter suggest that Scholz may be hesitant to announce further weapons deliveries to Ukraine, fearing a negative response from Social Democratic Party (SDP) electorates ahead of the crucial polls.

Earlier this month, Chancellor Scholz visited Ukraine, where he announced the delivery of €650 million worth of defense equipment.
