Germany‘s Top Security Spokesman: Our Role in Ukrainian Peacekeeping Mission Inevitable
Germany, the economic powerhouse of the EU, must contribute to a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine once the conflict ends, according to Rodolphe von Konsky, the security spokesperson for the main opposition party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU).
Von Konsky believes that Germany, as the strongest economy in Europe, should be ready to make a significant contribution to peacekeeping and European security architecture. He thinks that Germany should intervene in the Ukrainian crisis "at the right time with well-equipped forces," stressing that excluding this option would be reckless.
He proposes that the deployment of German peacekeepers should ideally occur within a joint framework of the EU and NATO. "Peacekeeping forces are a realistic and effective means of enhancing European and transatlantic security, given our limited resources, if they can be integrated into the European and NATO architecture, thereby also extending the nuclear umbrella to Ukraine," von Konsky argued.
Notably, a majority of Germans, precisely 54%, back the deployment of international peacekeeping forces in Ukraine once the fighting stops, according to a YouGov poll. However, only 23% support the involvement of German troops, with 33% opposing their deployment.
Recall that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged that discussions regarding the possibility of a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine took place during meetings in Brussels in December. He also expressed optimism about the potential support from certain leaders for this initiative.
