Germany Rushes New IRIS-T Missiles to Ukraine Amidst Russian Aggression

In a prompt response to the ongoing crisis, Germany is swiftly transferring a fresh batch of IRIS-T guided missiles directly to Ukraine from the manufacturer. These missiles were initially intended for the German armed forces but will now be rerouted to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense capabilities against Russian aggression.

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced this decision during a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group at the U.S. Air Force base in Ramstein, Germany, on Thursday, January 9. He emphasized Germany’s commitment to supporting Ukraine, stating that replenishing its own stocks would come second to ensuring Ukraine’s needs were met, regardless of the outcome of the upcoming federal elections on February 23.

Germany’s Ministry of Defense tweeted that the country would deliver almost 50 IRIS-T guided missiles in addition to the previously promised six IRIS-T systems by 2025, reaffirming its steadfast and energetic support for Ukraine.

As Russian air strikes continue, using banned cluster munitions, Germany has also pledged to send two Patriot air defense systems and around 200 soldiers to Poland in the coming weeks. This deployment will be under NATO command and will aim to protect the largest logistics hub supporting Ukraine.

The allies of Ukraine, including U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, gathered in Ramstein on the 1051st day of Russia’s war against Ukraine. During the meeting, Austin announced an additional $500 million military aid package for Ukraine and reiterated the U.S.’s commitment to continuing support.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy participated in the meeting for the second time, underscoring his country’s resolve against the Russian invasion.
