A courageous intervention by a bus driver may have averted a major attack after an explosive-laden drone was discovered at Leipzig/Halle airport, according to senior lawmakers and prosecutors. The incident occurred late on a Tuesday when a worker spotted a low-flying drone in a restricted area and kicked at it. The device crashed nearby, equipped with professional explosives and a detonator.
Bus Driver Intervenes as Explosive Drone Targets Strategic Leipzig Hub
Federal prosecutors launched a counterterrorism probe into the incident, which was reported on Wednesday. Lawmaker Detlef Seif from the governing conservative CDU party described the driver’s action as very daring and courageous, though also very dangerous. Armin Schuster, the interior minister for the state of Saxony, praised the intervention but cautioned that it was not a model to be emulated and that alerting authorities would be enough.
The aircraft hub serves as a vital operational base for NATO’s Strategic Airlift International Solution, known as SALIS, which uses Ukrainian Antonov transport planes to deliver military equipment to the alliance’s eastern flank from Finland to Romania. The facility also functions as international courier service DHL’s largest European air hub and acts as a temporary shelter protecting Ukrainian Antonov aircraft from attacks. German media reported that the explosive drone was found close to several of these large cargo freighters.
Germany Warns of Daily Hybrid Warfare and Espionage Threats
Following the airport security breach, German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt warned that hybrid warfare has become a daily threat to the nation. In an interview with the newspaper Bild am Sonntag, Dobrindt stated that while the country is not at war, it is the daily target of hybrid warfare, pointing to espionage, sabotage, cyberattacks, and covert operations aimed at destabilization. He characterized the Leipzig airport incident as a hybrid attack scenario
and a new quality of danger.
A spokesperson for Germany’s foreign ministry stated that Russia is behind daily attempts to exert influence to undermine democracy and erode trust in politics. Western security officials have suspected Russian intelligence involvement in previous incidents, including a 2024 incendiary device that ignited a freight container at an airport logistics center. The Russian Embassy in Berlin dismissed the Leipzig event as a fabricated provocation
and part of a new wave of anti-Russian hysteria without evidence.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz held a call to discuss the drone incident with Interior Minister Dobrindt and other cabinet members. In response to the growing security challenges, Dobrindt announced that a new drone security research center will be established later in August at a German Aerospace Center test airport in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt to enhance research into emerging threats.
Military Base Sighting Follows Leipzig Airport Incursion
Security concerns escalated further when the German Armed Forces confirmed that two drones were spotted flying over a military base in the western part of the country. Security surveillance at the Bundeswehr base in Mechernich, located near the Belgian border in North Rhine-Westphalia, reported seeing the drones at around 10 p.m. on Thursday, just two days after the Leipzig airport drone discovery.
Military police forces were deployed to the site and confirmed the sightings, prompting an investigation by the Euskirchen police department. German media reported that the targeted base hosts personnel responsible for maintaining US Patriot air defense systems, which play a crucial role in defending Ukraine against aerial attacks.
The recent cluster of incidents highlights broader regional vulnerabilities. Last year, mysterious drone flights over European Union airspace alarmed authorities and forced the cancellation of dozens of flights that stranded thousands of passengers. Western officials maintain that Russia and its proxies have staged dozens of attacks and provocations across Europe since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
