A 41-year-old man has been sentenced to six years and 10 months in jail and 12 strokes of the cane following a fatal confrontation in a Geylang back alley. Zubir Mohamed was sentenced on April 24 after pleading guilty to several charges, including voluntarily causing grievous hurt.
Fatal Confrontation in Geylang
The incident occurred on the afternoon of August 3, 2024, at the back alley of 669 Geylang Road. Zubir and his wife had gone to the location to purchase illicit medications.
Zubir initially attempted to get free cough syrup or pills from an individual identified in court as Tan by pretending it was his and his wife’s birthday. When Tan refused, Zubir asked 67-year-old Sivarajoo Pitchay Pillai for a “treat,” and Mr. Sivarajoo gave him $20, which Zubir used to buy cough syrup.
The situation escalated when Mr. Sivarajoo realized some of his tablets were missing after Zubir touched his pocket. When confronted, Zubir denied the theft and began hurling vulgarities.
CCTV footage revealed that Zubir pushed Mr. Sivarajoo, who relied on a walking stick, causing him to fall. Despite his wife’s attempts to hold him back, Zubir punched the older man in the face and tried to snatch his walking stick.
After a witness told Zubir to leave, the attacker returned minutes later to find Mr. Sivarajoo walking around. Zubir pushed him to the ground again, causing Mr. Sivarajoo to hit his head.
The victim was taken to Changi General Hospital, where doctors discovered a skull fracture and a brain haemorrhage. Despite brain surgery on August 3, he developed seizures on August 6 and remained in a vegetative state.
Mr. Sivarajoo’s family eventually decided to remove his ventilation, and he passed away on August 19, 2024.
A Pattern of Recidivism
The court heard that Zubir is a “recalcitrant, serial offender” who had been released from prison only months before these crimes. Deputy Public Prosecutor Quek Lu Yi noted that his actions escalated from causing hurt to a violent assault on a vulnerable elderly man.
Zubir was also sentenced for other offences committed between May and August 2024. This included stealing an electronic bicycle in Geylang Road on August 2 and stealing cash cards, a wallet, and cash from a car in Bedok North in July.
on May 7, 2024, Zubir punched a male student nurse at the Singapore General Hospital and hurled vulgarities at an auxiliary officer during the altercation.
Judicial Determination
Principal District Judge Toh Yung Cheong stated that Zubir was fully aware he was assaulting an elderly person. The judge noted that Zubir’s history of multiple convictions for causing hurt required a greater need for deterrence.

In mitigation, Zubir, who did not have legal representation, apologized to the victim’s family and stated he felt particularly guilty about the incident.
Given the court’s focus on recidivism, future cases involving serial offenders with a history of violence may see a similar judicial approach to ensure public safety. The court will continue to view the targeting of vulnerable individuals as a significant aggravating factor in sentencing.
